A place of peace above the water
St Matthew’s Church, Stalling Busk is a small, beautifully situated Arts and Crafts church with a gentle, contemplative character. It stands above Semerwater in the Upper Wensleydale valley, serving as both a place of worship and a quiet refuge for locals and visitors alike. Designed by Thomas Gerard Davidson and completed in 1909, the church reflects the movement’s emphasis on craftsmanship, natural materials, and harmony with the landscape. Set in a peaceful rural setting, our hillside position gives St Matthew's has a sense of stillness and simplicity, making it a favourite spot for private prayer and reflection. We are a living parish church, part of the Benefice of Upper Wensleydale and remain open daily for private prayer, with regular services and seasonal events.
